It is 2019 guys, so why are we still struggling with the stigma associated with Mental Illness? We continue to struggle to provide the love, acceptance, and awareness that is needed in our World. Why? With more than one in four families being impacted by the mental illness of at least one family member (research conducted by the World Health Organization), this is not a small issue we can continue to ignore. Organizations like the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness), the World Health Organization and many others are tirelessly working to provide research, tools, and awareness to help #breakthestigma that has long been associated with mental illnesses. This stigma continues to prevent so many people who have a diagnosable, treatable mental illness from seeking or receiving the help they deserve and need.
I created a video yesterday to share my thoughts on this important topic and while I was hoping to touch just one person, this video has reached over 1,600. Many of these viewers have reached out to me privately to share how mental illness has impacted their lives and to thank me for sharing this video. What I want to say to them is, Thank you for trusting me with your stories.
My hope is by sharing my Mom’s story and how mental illness has touched my life that I can help pave the way to a world that is empathetic and not judgmental to those impacted by mental illness. A world where it is ok to not be ok and even more so that people no longer feel ashamed to ask for help. Please help me show others they are not alone, if your family has been impacted in some way by mental illness please share this post with #iamoneinfour.
There is strength in numbers #iamoneinfour
